A Glimpse of Amsterdam’s Romance Amsterdam’s enchanting ambiance is epitomized by the Magere Brug, a timeless emblem of romance and beauty. Whether in the soft glow of morning or under the stars at night, the Magere Brug stands as a symbol of love and unity, drawing couples and admirers alike to experience its captivating allure.
A Bridge Steeped in History This is bridge 242 in the city’s numbering, and its name is an accident of economics. During the fourth city expansion of 1663 a monumental stone bridge was planned here, to carry the Kerkstraat across the Amstel. The Rampjaar of 1672 ruined that. The economy collapsed, demand for building plots on the far bank fell away, and the Nieuwe Herengracht, Nieuwe Keizersgracht and Nieuwe Prinsengracht stayed largely empty for years, which made a bridge pointless. When building finally crept in at the end of the century a crossing was put up after all, but far cheaper, in timber rather than stone, and much narrower. Magerder. Skinnier. That is where the name comes from, and the tale of two thin and miserly sisters who supposedly paid for it is pure invention, attached to the bridge long after the real reason had been forgotten.
Gerrit de Broen’s map of 1737 shows nine openings here and calls it Kerk Straats ofte Magere Brug. The bridge was rebuilt in 1871 and again in 1934, and it is the 1934 version, by Piet Kramer at the Dienst der Publieke Werken, that stands today: a double drawbridge, open only to cyclists and pedestrians, raised several times a day to let boats through. It has been a rijksmonument since 2002, and in 2015 it was given a Water and Heritage Awareness shield by ICOMOS.
