Piet Kramer’s Bridge at the Westermarkt, Where a Filled-In Canal Became Amsterdam’s Road to the West

The Nieuwe-Wercksbrug carries the Westermarkt across the Prinsengracht to the Rozengracht, directly beside the Westerkerk. Of the nine bridges in this stretch it is the busiest and the most consequential, because it does not merely cross a canal — it carries the main traffic artery between the centre of Amsterdam and the west of the city, complete with tram tracks. It is also a national monument, and in 2025 it entered a complete renovation.

Its story is unusual among the Prinsengracht crossings because the thing it connects to has changed shape. The Rozengracht is a street today. It was a canal once, and the decision to fill it in is what turned this bridge from an ordinary neighbourhood span into a piece of arterial infrastructure.

Structural Evolution: From Blaeu’s Map of 1649 to the Raadhuisstraat Breakthrough

Joan Blaeu’s map of the city around 1649 already shows a bridge at this location. At that date it led to the northern quay of the Rozengracht, which was still open water — a working canal running west into the Jordaan, lined with the quays and workshops of a district built for artisans rather than merchants.

The modern history of the bridge begins with a municipal decision of an entirely different order. The city chose the Rozengracht as the connecting route between Amsterdam-Centrum and Amsterdam-West, and to make that route work the Rozengracht was filled in and a breakthrough was forced for the Raadhuisstraat. This was surgery on the historic fabric of the city: a canal erased, a new street driven through existing blocks, in order to create a continuous road corridor from the Dam westward.

Bridge 63 sat directly in the path of that corridor. The consequence was that it had to be widened and strengthened — not for its own sake, but because a bridge built for a neighbourhood was suddenly required to carry a city.

Architectural Lineage: The 1923 Kramer Design, Built in 1925

The bridge as it stands was created in 1925, the product of a renovation based on a design of 1923 by P.L. Kramer — Piet Kramer — working for the Bridges department of the Public Works service of the Amsterdam municipality.

Kramer is the defining figure in Amsterdam’s twentieth-century bridge architecture. Working in the Amsterdam School idiom, he was responsible for a vast number of the city’s crossings, and his work is recognisable by its sculptural brickwork, its expressive masses at the abutments, its ironwork and its refusal to treat a bridge as a purely engineering problem. An Amsterdam School bridge is designed to be looked at from the water as well as walked over.

That a bridge of this significance was given to Kramer at the height of his powers, on a site beside Hendrick de Keyser’s Westerkerk, indicates how seriously the municipality took the Rozengracht corridor. The bridge is a listed national monument.

Urban and Social Context: Three Rails, Two Gauges, and the Tram to Zandvoort

The most technically curious fact about this bridge concerns its tram tracks. Until 1 September 1957 the crossing carried a three-rail track. This was a dual-gauge arrangement: standard gauge for the Amsterdam city tram, metre gauge for the interurban line running from Amsterdam to Zandvoort, with one rail shared between the two systems.

Three-rail dual-gauge track is an elegant solution to an awkward problem — two networks with incompatible gauges needing to use the same structure — and it is the sort of detail that vanishes from a city almost without trace once the service ends. The Zandvoort line closed; the third rail came up; the bridge kept its shape and lost its oddity.

Trams returned in force. Since 22 July 2018, lines 13 and 17 have run over the bridge. In 2025 a complete renovation began — the latest chapter in a structure that has been rebuilt, widened, strengthened and re-tracked for four centuries, always in response to whatever Amsterdam needed it to carry next.

Nieuwe-Wercksbrug (Bridge 63) The name of bridge 63 comes from the old name for the neighbourhood opposite the Westerkerk. At the time of construction, the Jordaan was known as the Nieuwe Werck. So it could have easily been named Jordaanbrug if it was built now. The Nieuwe-Wercksbrug is a fixed bridge in Amsterdam centre connecting Westermarkt with Rozengracht. It spans the Prinsengracht near the Oude Westertoren. For many years various tram and bus lines have crossed the bridge. Until September 1, 1957, three-rail track for the tram was in use here but now the regular tracks are in place and tram lines 13 and 17 have been running over the bridge since 22 July 2018. The day bus has disappeared here, but four night buses still run over the bridge. These are the same public transport lines, which go over the #bridge117 Rozengracht/Lijnbaansgracht.    

History and information

Nieuwe-Wercksbrug’s modern history began when the municipality chose Rozengracht as the connecting road between Amsterdam-Centre and West. The Rozengracht was filled in and a breakthrough was forced for the Raadhuisstraat. This choice resulted in having to be widened and reinforced. To this end, a tender was issued in July 1890 for 55 tons of beam iron and 19 tons of mogul plates for this bridge and in the Rozengracht over the Lijnbaansgracht. In the early 20’s it had to be renewed. Piet Kramer had considerable influence on this bridge. His style can be found in everything, first of all the architectural style of the Amsterdam School, the bridge piers with carved natural stone columns and decorative wrought iron balustrades in between, fixed to the pylons with straps. After completion, no major work has been carried out on the bridge. Of course it is no surprise that like most of the bridges we have encountered so far there has been a bridge for centuries. So old in fact the local neighbourhood has had time to change it’s name to Jordaan.
