The Amsterdam Light Festival has consistently brought innovative light art to the city with a new theme for each edition.

The buzz for Amsterdam Light Festival Edition 14 is building! Behind the scenes, international artists are immersed in bringing their groundbreaking light art concepts to life, meticulously selecting prime spots across Amsterdam’s famous canals. For this 14th installment, every artwork will explore the rich idea of “Legacy,” inviting viewers to ponder ‘how we want to be remembered,’ ‘what future we’re building,’ and ‘the lasting impact we leave behind.’ While the complete theme reveal is still to come, get ready for an extraordinary journey. The meticulously designed route will guide you through Amsterdam’s enchanting city center, showcasing breathtaking installations in, on, and beside its historic waterways. Whether you prefer the cozy comfort of a canal cruise, the active exploration by bike, or a leisurely stroll, the festival promises a unique perspective. Be ready: ticket sales officially launch on October 1, 2025! Whilst the official theme will be announced at a later stage it’s a safe bet that given the hints so far it will feature either LEGACY or FUTURE so for now I’m using the working title “Legacy & Future”. See the official site for more.
Here are the themes of the past 13 festivals:
- Edition 13 (2024-2025): Rituals
- This edition coincided with Amsterdam’s 750th anniversary, exploring how rituals help us transition from past to future and bring people together.
- Edition 12 (2023-2024): LOADING… Revealing Art, AI & Tech
- Focused on the impact of technology and artificial intelligence on our daily lives and society.
- Edition 11 (2022-2023): Imagine Beyond
- Invited visitors to transcend the here and now and imagine a limitless future. (Note: One source also mentioned “In Search of the Miraculous” for this edition, but “Imagine Beyond” is more widely cited as the official theme.)
- Edition 10 (2021-2022): Celebrate Light
- A special anniversary edition celebrating 10 years of the festival, bringing back popular artworks from previous years.
- Edition 9 (2020-2021): When Nature Calls
- A reflection on our relationship with nature, especially relevant during the pandemic.
- Edition 8 (2019-2020): DISRUPT!
- Explored how art can challenge, change, and disrupt our perceptions.
- Edition 7 (2018-2019): The Medium is the Message
- Inspired by Marshall McLuhan’s famous statement, focusing on the role of light in conveying messages and Amsterdam as a medium for storytelling.
- Edition 6 (2017-2018): EXISTENTIAL
- Delved into themes of human existence, questioning life’s meaning through light art.
- Edition 5 (2016-2017): A View on Amsterdam
- Reflected on Amsterdam’s urban landscape, architecture, and identity.
- Edition 4 (2015-2016): Friendship
- Explored connections, relationships, and solidarity through light.
- Edition 3 (2014-2015): A Bright City
- Focused on the city’s future, innovation, and positive developments.
- Edition 2 (2013-2014): Building with Light
- Highlighted the architectural and constructive possibilities of light as a medium.
- Edition 1 (2012-2013): Illuminade (This was the walking route’s name, while the overall festival was generally about illuminating the city for the first time with a dedicated art route)
- The inaugural edition, focused on introducing light art to the city’s canals and public spaces.
